OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- In April 2024, St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Deputy Chanterria Albert was killed in a shooting while off duty, and over a year later, the Opelousas Police Department is still seeking answers.

The shooting occurred on Park Avenue when Chanterria and a male victim were shot inside a vehicle. While the male survived, Chanterria tragically lost her life.

"We're still actively investigating and getting to every lead we can to try to figure out what has happened in this situation," said Joe Dupree Anderson of the Opelousas Police Department.

Chanterria's family says they have been left in pain over the past year, seeking justice and closure for their loss.

"We all lost someone special," said Rachelle Milburn, Chanterria's aunt. "I just hope somebody has the heart to come up and speak on behalf of Macky."

Chanterria's sister, Trisranie Albert, expressed the difficulty of coping with the loss.

"I'm trying my hardest to be strong for my sisters and my mom," Trisranie said. "But this is hard. Imagine if that was your sister or your granddaughter or your niece. It's time. It's time to come forward. This has gone on for too long."

The Opelousas Police Department continues to seek the public's help in solving the case.

"You see what senseless gun violence in our community does to a family. This is the time for someone who saw something, who knows something, to say something," Anderson said.

"So, I'm hoping that even the hardest of the hard, you'll have a heart," said Milburn. "Y'all come, y'all talk, y'all do something. This probably won't give us closure, but it's some type of closure. It's some type of peace."
