Man convicted in Opelousas shooting near Mama's Fried Chicken
ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A Washington man has been found guilty of multiple charges including attempted second-degree murder for a shooting incident near Mama's Fried Chicken in Opelousas, officials said.
According to officials, after the two-day the trial and a short deliberation, on Wednesday Nicholas Sam, 32, of Washington was found guilty of one count of attempted second degree murder, two counts of attempted manslaughter, one count of illegal use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and one count of felon in possession of firearms.
The shooting occurred near Mama's Fried Chicken on April 2, 2023 on West Landry Street in Opelousas. Officials said surveillance video caught Sam running through the parking lot, dropping the magazine of his weapon, reloading the handgun and chasing the car before discharging his weapon.
With the several felony convictions, Sam faces a minimum imprisonment of no less than ten years and up to fifty years at hard labor.
Sam's sentencing is set for Jan. 8, 2026, officials said.
