14-year-old arrested following stolen vehicle pursuit in Opelousas
OPELOUSAS, LA. (KLFY) -- A 14-year old juvenile was arrested following pursuit of a stolen vehicle that occurred earlier this morning, police said.
According to officers, they attempted to conduct a traffic stop this morning on a black GMC pickup truck reported stolen. The driver allegedly refused to comply, and officers initiated a pursuit. Due to increasing speeds and concerns for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety.
Later on, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s deputy reported how they located the vehicle near LA. 357, where the driver was allegedly fleeing on foot. The suspect was located in a nearby sugarcane field and was taken into custody, officials said.
During the investigation, it was discovered the suspect was identified as a 14-year-old juvenile. Several motorists reported sustained damage to their vehicles caused by the fleeing suspect during the pursuit, police said.
The juvenile is being charged with aggravated flight from an officer and criminal damage to property. Additional charges are pending review and processing
