YLAFAYETTE sign celebrates 10 years as a Lafayette landmark
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The YLAFAYETTE sign in Parc Sans Souci, Lafayette, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this Friday, marking a decade as a beloved community landmark.
Installed in December 2014, the seven-foot-tall concrete sign was funded through a community-driven crowdfunding campaign via Civicside. Over the past ten years, the sign has become a symbol of Acadiana's creativity and unity, featuring over 107 unique paintings by local artists and community groups.
"The YLAFAYETTE sign began as a creative way for our people to become the 'Y' in Lafayette because our people are why Lafayette is such a special place," said Kate Durio, the sign's creator and design coordinator.
The anniversary celebration will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Parc Sans Souci, just before the Downtown Alive! event. The sign has served as a canvas for various community events, including weddings, proposals, birthdays and festivals, reflecting moments of celebration and togetherness.
Children are often seen playing around the sign, adding to its role as a vibrant gathering spot in downtown Lafayette. It has become a favorite location for photo opportunities, with visitors frequently posing as the 'Y' in Lafayette.
Kate Durio highlighted the sign's role as a landmark of connection and creativity, stating that it reflects the heart of Lafayette's culture and social landscape. The community is excited to celebrate this milestone and looks forward to the sign's continued evolution.
