Lafayette Parish to vote on renewal of two property taxes

0

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Lafayette Parish voters on Nov. 15 will decide whether two property taxes will be renewed for another 10 years.

The Mayor-President continues to push the importance of the two millages. If the renewals fail, services will be at risk. The millages were established in 2015; bring in an estimated $23.5 million annually.

LCG chief administrative officer, Rachel Godeaux, explains that if the millages fail, Lafayette Parish will face funding and service gaps.

"We can't necessarily spend our road and bridge mileage, let's say, if that one passes, on the Office of Public Health Services. We couldn't spend that money on mosquito control," Godeaux said. "It's not a new tax. It's something that comes up every ten years. We want to ensure that funding remains dedicated for the next ten years of service."

One millage helps pay for road and bridge improvements. The Public Safety Millage includes drainage, mosquito abatement and fire protection for the unincorporated parish areas.

"I'm sure that is something people don't want to give up, is mosquito control," Godeaux said.

One council member said the parish-wide vote is a quality-of-life decision.

"This will provide the continuation of funding that's needed and that these services can continue to be provided without disruption in service delivery," Godeaux said.
