St. Landry Parish cancels annual BBQ Festival
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- St. Landry Parish Government has announced its decision to discontinue the annual BBQ Festival.
According to Parish President Jessie Bellard, the lack of availability of rides and the escalating costs associated with organizing the event were the reasons for discontinuing the festival.
"The 2025 Barbecue Fest was probably the most attended we had since we started this in 2021. But it comes at such a cost for the parish that we just cannot continue to do this," Bellard said. It's so difficult to find people that's going to come with rides if they do want to come with some rides for the kids is a minimum of $50,000 to do that. By the time you factor in the labor and the security and everything that comes with it is too expensive,"
The 2025 festival was scheduled for June 20-22. It was held anually at the Yambilee Festival Grounds in Opelousas.
Over the years, the event had become a cherished tradition, so the decision was not made lightly, according to St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard.
“We want to sincerely thank all of the sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees who have supported the BBQ Festival over the years,” Bellard said. “While we’re disappointed to discontinue the event, we remain committed to finding new ways to bring our community together.”
Organizers said they remain dedicated to exploring future opportunities for community events that "celebrate the spirit of St. Landry Parish."
