Protesters gather at Heritage Park in Junction City
JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (KSNT) – Protesters gathered at Heritage Park in Junction City on Friday.
This is just one of many protests that have taken place across the country after the death of George Floyd.
Protesters lined the sidewalks at Heritage Park with signs in hand.
“What brought me out here today was the death of George Floyd,” said organizer of the protest Michael Turner. “That was the final straw. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
People from all walks of life came together calling for an end to police brutality towards people of color.
“We can come together as a people,” said protester Cheryl Freeman. “There’s power in numbers. We can come together.”
The group marched through downtown and to local law enforcement offices and even had conversations with officers that were outside.
“One of them had commented, I asked what his feelings were with all of this police brutality and his comment was ‘We’re not trained that way’,” said protester Kelsey Olivares. “He hopes that he never sees anything happen like that in Junction City.”
While the reason they’re protesting is a painful one, some protesters say standing in solidarity with one another is what matters.
“It’s about peace,” said protester Sherry Thornton. “It’s about love. We’re loving each other and taking care of each other and that’s what it’s all about.”
