TOPEKA (KSNT) - City leaders are set to discuss a rezoning proposal next week that could pave the way for transforming some local farmland into space for new duplexes.
The Topeka City Council is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, July 15 and take action on a new ordinance that would, if approved, allow for the development of new housing options. The rezoning proposal would allow for several new duplexes to be constructed to the southeast of the intersection of Northwest Lyman Road and Northwest Vail Avenue in north Topeka.
The Topeka Planning Commission forwarded a recommendation to the city council to approve the rezoning request. The rezoning request would change the land from being designated as a space for single family dwellings to a two-family dwelling district to accommodate the new duplexes.
The rezoning proposal concerns a total of 16 acres of vacant, undeveloped farm land. If city councilmembers approve of the ordinance, the developer would be able to construct a maximum of 40 new duplexes that would create up to 80 housing units.
