CARBONDALE (KSNT) - The City of Carbondale has issued a water boil advisory and is alerting residents of nearby road closures.
The City of Carbondale issued a water boil advisory at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 10. The city reports that boring crews are assisting Public Works to fix a water line coming into town. Residents are encouraged to boil water for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth while the advisory is active.
The KDHE followed up on July 11 with a formal Water Boil Advisory for risk of bacterial contamination. The advisory will remain in place until the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) rescinds it.
Topeka Avenue from Main Street to Market Street will be closed while crews work on fixing a broken water line. The city said it is currently operating on water tower pressure only.
"Please help us by limiting your water use immediately," the city wrote on social media. "Only use the amount of water absolutely necessary until further notice."
Lane closures will be in place from Main and Topeka Avenue to Prost Road. The southbound on-ramp and the off-ramp from northbound Highway 75 are both closed. Crews are out to help direct traffic.
The city will be holding a special meeting on Friday, July 11 at noon at City Hall to discuss the water main break under Highway 75. The city said it would provide updates as soon as it can.
Local residents are encouraged to take precautions while the advisory is active. These include the following:
Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
