Evergy files settlement with Kansas Corporation Commission over rate increase request, hearing set for next week

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Evergy is one step closer to possibly raising its customer rates. On Monday, the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) will begin hearings on the energy provider's proposed rate increase.

In January, Evergy filed and application with the KCC requesting an annual base rate change of $192 million. On Tuesday, it filed a settlement on that request after reaching an agreement with the parties involved.

Evergy spokeswoman Gina Penzig told 27 News that under the agreement, total rates would increase about 9.6%. But the exact amount depends on the customer class. For residential customers, Penzig said the average monthly bill increase would be $9 a month, or 6.97%. The agreement is still subject to review.

The company issued the following statement regarding Tuesday's filing:

“Evergy and parties to our rate case reached a constructive agreement that allows recovery of investments made to provide reliable service to our Evergy Kansas Central customers. Since our formation in 2018, Evergy has held rate increases well below the rate of inflation and to levels lower than average increases regionally. We continue to make our costs more competitive while investing in infrastructure needed to ensure reliable service and support growth in our communities.”

Following next week's hearing, the KCC will take time to consider the request. It's expected to make a final decision in late September.
