Extreme heat warning issued in northeast Kansas

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Federal weather officials have issued an extreme heat warning for much of northeast Kansas prior to the weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an extreme heat warning shortly after 2 p.m. on July 18. The warning will remain in place from noon on Saturday, July 19 through to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.

The NWS said the warning is being triggered due to expected hot conditions with heat index values up to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. People are encouraged to not leave children and animals unattended in cars during the warning and reduce the amount of time they spend outdoors.

"Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."
