Local activist group urging Kansas legislature to help stop child predators
TOPEKA (KSNT) — One Kansas activist group is sending a strong message to Kansas lawmakers ahead of next year's session.
We spoke with the Directors for local organization, "Protecting Kansas Children from Sexual Predators." They are asking the Kansas legislature to do more to protect children from child predators.
Currently, Kansas is only one of 12 states that have not passes "Erins Law." This law requires schools to teach children about how to protect themselves from sexual abuse.
Group Directors Kim Bergman and Tess Ramirez tell us, passing this law in Kansas would go a long way towards protecting Kansas children.
Additionally, they want to make it easier for survivors of abuse to access police records related to their case.
"I think a lot of legislatures don't necessarily know how big of a problem this is in our communities because for a long time this is something that just wasn't talked about. We've had several legislatures say they didn't think this was a problem where they were from," said Kim Bergman.
"I would say that it's not their job to worry. That it should be our job to worry and take care of them so that they can never be put in that position in the first place. If they are in that I hope they get help and reach out and talk to someone," said Tess Ramirez.
""Protecting Kansas Children from Sexual Predators" will be active during this next session. They commonly set up a booth in the statehouse to speak to and educate lawmakers.
