TOPEKA (KSNT) — Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is now speaking out on her decision to sue President Donald Trump.
Kelly is part of a multi-state lawsuit suing the Trump Administration. She joins more than 20 lawmakers from across the country who have also sued Trump over his removal of federal funding.
This lawsuit could cause conflict between Kelly and Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach. Kelly said she has been in contact with Kobach over this lawsuit.
"We asked the Attorney General to represent the state of Kansas in this particular case, he said 'no,'" Kelly said. "So, with that I then used my constitutional power to represent the state, and that's what I'm doing."
However, Kobach has the right to represent Kansas in federal court cases. This means he could choose to represent Kansas as a supporter of the Trump Administration.
Kelly said she is committed to fighting for what she believes is best for Kansas.
"I will fight the administration if I think they're doing something that is not in the best interest of Kansas and clearly just out of nowhere withholding grant money, funding that has been appropriated by congress to the states, and the states have built their budgets and their programming and services around that," Kelly said. "Yeah, I'm going to fight that, it's wrong."
