New gas station coming to southeast Topeka in 2026
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Southeast Topeka is set to get a new gas station under local ownership.
Tyler Wible, owner of Wible Property Development LLC, told 27 News that plans are being made to install a new gas station on a vacant lot northwest of where Southeast Adams Street and Southeast 21st Street meet. He said this follows years of development work and reaching out to stakeholders with the Central Highland Park, Hi-Crest and Jefferson Square neighborhoods to gather their input.
Topeka's City Council approved a rezoning proposal for the property in July this year. Now, Wible said a local gas station owner, Tony Mashaal with Tony's Quick Shop, is set to construct a second location on the land.
"In 2024, we decided to search for local owners/operators to open up a location on this property," Wible said. "The property and project was sold to the owner of Tony's to open a second location. After the sale, I continued on with the project under the new owner and we have successfully secured the full zoning change."
Mashaal's current gas station can be found at 1107 Southwest Sixth Avenue in Topeka. He said he hopes to start construction on the project in early 2026.
"I am not building anything else or leasing any of the empty areas around, I will leave it empty," Mashaal said. "I believe the neighborhood would benefit from a second location for Tony’s Quick Shop who offers low prices and good quality in gas at a time where everything is going up."
Wible said he originally tried reaching out to Casey's for a new gas station at Southeast 21st Street and Southeast Adams Street but the company decided not to go through with moving into this area. He thinks the inclusion of a new gas station in this area will be beneficial to locals and make use of vacant land.
"A majority of the land has sat vacant for decades," Wible said. "There was a home there inhabited by a Mr. Joe McBride as a tenant before the house was condemned by the city of Topeka. Mr. McBride has since passed, but was a daily customer at Tony's Quick Shop, so it is bittersweet but fitting to have a second location open up there."
Mashaal said McBride was "a good friend and customer" of his gas station and pitched in often to help keep Tony's Quick Shop clean on his own time. He said he decided to build the second location on McBride's old property partly to honor his memory.
"He [McBride] appreciated the prices we offer not only for snacks and drinks but for the gas," Mashaal said. "Joe would go out of his way and pick up trash that he would find around the gas station and mow the lawn even though I had a contract with a company to do it."
Wible said work is moving forward on plans to create inlets, outlets and easements for the upcoming new gas station. He is also working with addressing safety concerns brought forward by the local neighborhoods.
"It just feels right to support local business, remember local people, and keep business development local to ensure Topekans are helping Topekans thrive," Wible said.
