Topeka Public Schools gets families ready for the school year
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Whitson Elementary School greeted parents and students for its "Sneak Peek" night.
The 501 school district is allowing families to meet their children's instructors before school starts.
The goal is to get kids comfortable with their new environment.
"I feel like there's just a big mystery about going into school. You don't know what you have in your classroom, and then when you get to see it, you get to see the colorful classroom. You see the fun environment, the safe environment," Third Grade Teacher, Tyler Washington said. "You get to meet the person that you're going to be with for the year. So it's kind of like a calming thing for the students."
It's also a good chance for teachers and parents to discuss students needs heading into the school year.
"I mean, relationships are the foundation of what we do. If we don't know the kids and we don't know the families, we're not going to be able to connect," P.E. Teacher, Savannah Guy said. "We're not going to be able to meet them where they're at and get them what they need."
Kindergartners, sixth and ninth graders start school on Tuesday, August 12, while everyone else starts on Wednesday, August 13.
