Demolition scheduled for bridge over I-70 in Junction City
JUNCTION CITY (KSNT) - Kansas transportation officials are getting ready to start a major bridge demolition project on I-70 near Junction City.
The Kansa Department of Transportation (KDOT) is set to remove the J-Hill Road Bridge near Grandview Plaza that crosses over I-70 and replace it. KDOT has currently scheduled work on this project to start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Ashley Perez with KDOT told 27 News the entire project is expected to run through to July 2026 depending on weather conditions. She said that multiple excavators will be used to take down the bridge.
KDOT reports that westbound I-70 will be closed during this initial phase of the project. Drivers will use nearby ramps to navigate around the road work.
"Traffic will be diverted up and down the interchange ramps at this exit during the overnight closure of the bridge," Perez said.
Traffic will return to its normal configuration on the highway after the demolition phase is complete and work moves forward on replacing the bridge. The City of Junction City lists King Construction as the primary contractor for this project.
