Man accused of killing Topeka local charged with murder
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Shawnee County District Attorney's Office has filed charges against a man accused of killing a local 30-year-old in a Labor Day shooting.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced in a press release on Sept. 15 that he has filed charges against Justin R. Shumway, 42, for his role in the alleged killing of 30-year-old Cody Bush earlier this month. His charges include the following:
- Murder in the first degree.
- Attempted aggravated robbery.
- Conspiracy to commit robbery.
Officers with the Topeka Police Department (TPD) were called around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1 regarding reports of a shooting in the 100 block of Northwest Holman Street. Police arriving in the area found one man, later identified as Bush, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound in the backyard of a nearby home. First responders declared him dead at the scene.
The TPD later arrested Shumway on Sept. 8.
Kagay said both parties involved in this situation were known to one another. Shumway is currently being held at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a $1,000,000 bond.
