Riley County Emergency Management shares preparedness tips

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Riley County Emergency Management Assistant Director Lori Harrison joined the 27 News Morning Show to talk about National Preparedness Month and local resources on Friday.

Harrison said it's important to know what to do in emergencies whether you are at home, work, school or traveling. She said you should share your plans with family members, including travel routes and emergency contacts.

Harrison recommends making a supply kit with essentials to last three days that includes food, water, clothing, bedding and other necessities.

"And then staying informed," Harrison said. "So how do you receive information? Whether that's through a NOAA radio, through an app or some sort of broadcast media or mass notifications systems."

Harrison said it's best to have multiple ways to stay informed. She recommends including your pets in the plan.

"Oftentimes, we see folks think about taking their pet to the vet for boarding during an event, and that may not be available," Harrison said.

Harrison recommends that people visit Ready.gov to read a comprehensive emergency preparedness resource. She said you can visit the Riley County Government's website for local guidance.
