Why are flags at half-staff in Topeka?
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Governor Laura Kelly is directing flags to fly at half-staff at several local government buildings in Topeka.
Kelly announced in a press release on Sept. 19 that she is directing flags be moved to the half-staff position at all court buildings and facilities. This order also includes the State Capitol Complex in Topeka.
The order is meant to honor the life of Magistrate Judge and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Erich Campbell. He passed away on Sept. 18.
“From his time in the Army to his time on the bench, Judge Campbell demonstrated a commitment to public service,” Kelly said. “We owe him a debt of gratitude for his leadership on behalf of Kansans and our country. My condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time."
Kelly's half-staff order will remain in effect until Campbell is interred on Thursday, Sept. 25.
