K-State vets save at risk dog, now up for adoption

0

MANHATTAN (KSNT) - A hurt dog is getting a second chance at life thanks to K-State veterinarians and the Riley County Humane Society.

When Korah first arrived at K-State Veterinary Health Center, she was dangerously thin, her fur was matted, and she had a deadly number of fleas.

The young German Shepherd was on her last leg, and that's when the Riley County Humane Society stepped in, providing the treatment Korah needed to survive. K-State vets and the Humane Society spent more than 6 hours nursing Korah back to health.

She needed to receive two blood transfusions because of her flea-induced anemia, as well as small increments of food to get her energy up.

"After the first transfusion and the IV fluids and getting her cleaned up. She was already acting differently. She was starting to stand up, and she was looking at people's faces right away. We could tell that she was a really good girl," K-State Emergency Clinician Stefanie Durbin said. "I would say it was one of the best examples of teamwork I've seen in the hospital; everyone just loves her."

Riley County Humane Society is a non-profit; it's been helping animals since 1975. They rely entirely on donations to keep their organization running.

"We take a lot of intensive cases. And so, I think the other thing is our community assistance. So, we're trying to get at the root of the problem using that assistance because, you know, rescue is reactive," RCHS, Lisa Pohlamn said. "Unless we get more spay and neuters done, there's going to be more and more animals to save because there's just so many in shelters that are dying."

It wasn't just the medical care that made the difference.

A foster family opened their home, helping Korah regain her strength and spirit.

"She goes out in the backyard, she runs, chases squirrels, rabbits," Foster Parent, Madison Looney said. "She's just a whole different dog now that she wasn't when they brought her in. And that's why we do what we do."

Now, Korah is on the road to recovery and showing just how powerful teamwork can be when a community rallies around an animal in need. Korah is looking for a forever home with a family ready for an energetic dog. You can sign up to foster an animal or donate here.
