Washburn celebrates 17th annual Women in Science Day
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Washburn University is celebrating their 17th year of women in stem by having their annual Women In Science Day.
Today’s program brought together hundreds of seventh-grade girls to learn from several scientists. With 15 different labs, the girls have a wide variety to learn from. Some activities consist of microbiology, forensic chemistry, and isolating DNAA from strawberries.
"The girls are always excited when they go in, but they are more excited when they come out of the lab because they kind of don't know what to expect and so they are always impressed by what they see," said Associate professor of Biology at Washburn, Susan Bjerke.
Organizers say girls perform as well as boys in science, but lose interest as they get into high school. They hope this will help more girls get interested in science, technology, engineering and math.
