Chiefs vs. Raiders preview: An inside look at the numbers

0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders have one of the NFL's longest and most bitter rivalries, dating back to the AFL in the 1960s.

The Chiefs hold the all-time regular season series lead 75-55-2 and also lead 2-1 in the postseason.

Since Andy Reid took over in Kansas City, the Chiefs have dominated the season series, and that only continued once Patrick Mahomes became the starter.

In fact, Reid has is tied with former Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels for the most wins at Allegiant Stadium since it opened in 2020, including their most recent Super Bowl victory in 2024.

That's astonishing number for a team that only plays there once a year. Since he became head coach of the Chiefs in 2013, Reid is 20-4 vs. the Raiders.

As for Mahomes, the numbers may be even more impressive. He is 12-2 in his career vs. the Raiders with 33 touchdowns, five interceptions and 4,141 yards.

So, while this is considered one of the NFL's longstanding rivalries, it certainly hasn't been competitive as of late.

But, the most notable regular season matchup between these teams over the past few seasons was the Raiders shocking road upset against the Chiefs on Christmas Day in 2023. They completely shut down the Chiefs offense and scored two defensive touchdowns.

That was the last Raiders win in this rivalry and a turning point for the Chiefs, who didn't lose a game for the rest of the season, en route to their second straight Super win at the Allegiant stadium.

While the rivalry has been lopsided, the Raiders have consistently tried to "poke the bear" over the years. Those instances include:

  • In November 2020, after defeating the Chiefs on the road, the Raiders bus took a victory lap around Arrowhead Stadium.
  • The next season, in December 2021, the Raiders stepped on the Chiefs logo prior to a game they ended up losing 48-9.
  • During training camp in 2024, former Raiders safety Trey Taylor mocked Patrick Mahomes with a Kermit Muppet, imitating his voice

The Chiefs are currently listed as whopping 12.5 point favorites. It will be intriguing to see what the 137th edition of this rivalry brings us.
