Food spill reported in Topeka creek, cleanup in progress

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas health officials say people in Topeka should avoid contact with a local stream until cleanup for a recent spill into the water is cleared.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a stream advisory on Oct. 24 for Deer Creek in Topeka near 10th Street and Southeast Deer Creek Parkway. The advisory is being issued as a result of a food-grade material spill that is classified as non-hazardous.

The KDHE said cleanup is currently underway for this and the spill is localized to the designated area of Deer Creek. People are advised to avoid entering the stream, including pets and children, until all of the potential contaminants are removed from the water.

The KDHE will take down the advisory once it has been determined that entering the water is safe once more. You can read through the stream advisory on the KDHE's website by clicking here.
