AUSTIN (KXAN) — On a Tuesday Facebook post about the pending closure of Highland Lanes, KXAN viewers shared their reactions and memories of the decades-old bowling alley.
"So with this, we have no real bowling alley anymore. That is so sad for city of Austin!!" said KXAN viewer Mihira Chandrasoma.
In an interview with the Austin Business Journal (ABJ), Highland Lanes co-owner John Donovan said that the decades-old local business will close by the end of 2024.
"We don’t own the building (and) we will be losing our lease," said Donovan in an interview with ABJ. "Right now, we have through the end of this year, and past that, that’s really all I know.”
For others, the closure represents a changing city and the declining popularity of bowling.
"I know people want it to stay open because of their vanishing youth, but the hard truth is the popularity of bowling has decreased a lot in the past few decades. Lanes are closing everywhere. People just don’t bowl anymore," said KXAN viewer Howard Thompson.
Still, others presented other options for local bowlers, such as Westgate Lanes on West William Cannon Drive.
"Yeah, West Gate Lanes has a lot going on, tons of food trucks and other stuff other than bowling, but lots of bowling!" Sean Deome said.
