Busy Bee Caves Road intersection backup prompts TxDOT review
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- TxDOT is looking into a traffic light in Westlake after a KXAN viewer shared her safety concerns.
An Austin resident since 2008, Sally Bradley said she noticed people driving dangerously because of a long wait at the traffic light on Bee Cave Road and Las Cimas Parkway.
"The light doesn't realize that I'm sitting there and waiting. So I can wait up to five minutes before anything actually happens. What I've noticed that actually triggers this light is if there is a car coming in the cross area. There's a lot of cars trying to get in this area right now," Bradley said.
She said the specific problem is eastbound traffic on Bee Caves Road trying to take a left into the medical center complex at the intersection of Village at West Lake.
"Many people who are employees in this area will either run the light on a red or maybe they do a U-turn early and enter — enter the complex at another entrance," Bradley said.
The signal is managed by TxDOT, and KXAN reached out to ask about Bradley's safety concerns.
TxDOT said it's one of about 150 signals it manges in Travis County. It has nine signal positions that manage those lights, and collaborates with contractors to address ongoing signal work. TxDOT said it's looking into this issue.
It's not the first time Bradley said she reported her concern to officials, but she's hoping this will be her last.
"I was a full time employee in this — in this area, and so I would travel this road every day," she said. "Now I'm just part time, but still been trying to get this light fixed a little better for the community."
