'What Texans do': Austin restaurants donating hot meals to flood victims this weekend
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Joe Condit, the co-founder of FoodserviceIQ, will be one of the volunteers out Saturday donating hot meals from local restaurants to those most impacted by devastating floods.
Condit says one of his friends called and asked if he could help get hot meals donated because of his connection to the food industry. He said the response was overwhelming.
"It was incredible," Joe Condit said. "In five minutes...we raised over 200 hot meals through Matt's El Rancho and the original Black's Barbecue."
They now have a list of restaurants that are offering hot meals for Condit and other volunteers to pick up Saturday morning and bring to those still reeling from floods a week ago.
"It really inspired the rest of us to think, wow, restaurants should hear this, and the community should hear this. It just gives a real a testament to the amazing hospitality community and the restaurants that are willing to step up and help people during this devastating time," Condit said.
He said those hot meals will first be dropped off at devastation sites near Leander around midday. That's where a couple hundred people are trapped due to bridge failure caused by the floods.
"This is what Texans do. You know, we're not doing anything heroic. We're just doing what Texans do," Condit said. "And our thoughts and prayers are with these families, and I encourage everyone this weekend...you know, if you have the time, please just make a phone call, ask a friend, go on a Facebook group and see how you can help."
