City of Kyle mayor stepping down in November, special election to take place
AUSTIN (KXAN) — City of Kyle Mayor Travis Mitchell made an announcement Tuesday and said he will step down from his role as mayor in November — one year before the end of his final term.
Mitchell said on social media he wanted to share the announcement Tuesday, so the city council could have "the necessary time to call a special election."
Mitchell said his intention was to announce he was stepping down from the role during the Kyle City Council meeting, which was scheduled Tuesday. However, a "credible" bomb threat led to a recess of the meeting, Mitchell said. In the same message, he decided to share the news of his stepping down.
"This decision comes after deep reflection," he said.
Mitchell shared his reasons behind his stepping down, which included saying he felt the city was "in a strong position."
"Our council and staff have worked collaboratively for most of my tenure, and we have much to show for it. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited to watch as our new major investments begin to materialize in the years ahead. That was my goal — to help Kyle reach this point — and I step down with confidence in our long-term position in the region," he said.
Additionally, Mitchell said he was ready to return to work "in the private sector," saying serving as the mayor put other parts of his life on hold. Last, he said, "part of leadership is knowing when to step aside."
"Kyle is full of smart, capable, and committed people. I’ve seen firsthand how much talent and care exists in this community. I believe strongly that now is the time to create space for the next generation of leadership to rise and help write the city’s next chapter," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said he will remain in office until November, and that a special election is set to be held then at the same time as council races for District 1 and District 3.
"I’m proud of the town we’ve built together. I’m proud of how far we’ve come. And I’ll be proud to leave this office believing — without hesitation — that Kyle’s best days are still ahead," Mitchell said.
