Travis County provides update on damage, debris removal post-flood
AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, the Travis County Commissioners Court met and provided updates on the fatal flooding event that moved through the area earlier this month.
The county said it continues to operate a remote Emergency Operations Center in the Leander area.
In an update, Travis County Flood Plain Manager Shawn Snyder said roughly 200 structures were damaged, including at least 79 that had major damage. However, the county said the numbers could increase as it works to complete further assessments.
Snyder said 25 to 30 structures were destroyed or washed off the property. Those looking to rebuild will have the fee for those permits waived.
County Executive for Transportation and Natural Resources Cynthia McDonald said more than 38,000 cubic yards of debris have been removed from the Sandy Creek neighborhood over the past two weeks. McDonald said that was enough debris to fill 3,173 dump trucks.
In addition to the debris removal, the Sandy Creek Bridge was assessed and determined to be salvageable, so it would not need to be torn down. The county said it was working to create a design contract, which will take about two weeks to complete. Construction is then expected to take 45 days.
The county said it has requested state assistance to help with private property debris and vehicle removal.
