Kristen's Classroom: July weather extremes
AUSTIN (KXAN) - With such an unusually wet and "cool" start to the month, many may wonder - is this July making it into the record books?
July's extreme temperatures
July is typically our second-hottest month of the year in Austin, with an average temperature of 85.8°. July 2023 was the hottest July on record in Austin, with 2022 not far behind.
We've had our fair share of triple digits in July's past. Nearly a third of all 100-degree days have come in July. July 31 is the day with the most triple digits, reaching or exceeding the century mark 31 times. We've even seen temperatures spike to 110° in 2022 and 2018, our second hottest temperature on record (hottest: 112° - Aug 2011, Sept 2000).
And "chilly" July days? Believe it or not, we've had some of those too.
July's precipitation extremes
Some of our wettest Julys have been a result of decaying or stalled tropical systems.
Of note, July 4, 2025, was the wettest Independence Day on record with 0.86" of rain.
As of yesterday, July 2025 currently sits as the 40th coolest when looking at average temperatures. It's the 22nd coolest when only looking at high temperatures and the 25th warmest for morning lows.
So far this month, we've picked up 6.08" of rain. If we don't receive any more between now and the end of the month, July 2025 will go into the record books as the ninth wettest on record.
