Video: Inside Texas' tallest tower right here in Austin
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Downtown Austin can now boast that it's home to the tallest tower in Texas.
The Waterline Tower, located off Red River Street, will top out and officially reach a height of 1,025 feet on Friday.
That's 23 feet taller than the previous tallest tower in the Lone Star State — the JPMorgan Chase Tower in Houston. The Chase Tower has held that title since 1981, according to Lincoln Property Company.
The Waterline will house a hotel, 700,000 square feet of office space and 352 multi-family apartments for rent.
These different parts and uses of the building will be separate from each other, including having their own parking and amenities, according to Senior Vice President at Lincoln Property Company Andy Smith.
The building also has access to the Waterloo Greenway and Waller Creek.
"We look at this now as kind of the central spot of downtown. We're connected now to downtown through the bridges that go across Waller Creek. You've got the Rainey District right here that we're kind of the gateway into. We've really designed it to make it more of a community area," Smith said.
He added that one of the challenges faced while building the Waterline has been coordinating over 800 people and workers at the construction site at any given time.
Lincoln Property Company said more than 4,750 people total have worked on the tower since construction started in 2022.
Smith said Austin has been "very thoughtful on how they approach density."
"The city wants to make downtown dense, and so we've embraced that," he said.
Smith said the tower is scheduled to open in early fall 2026. The final beam will be lifted into place on Friday.
