Police conducting death investigation after man allegedly electrocuted in Elgin
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A 47-year-old Bastrop man died after he was allegedly electrocuted early Friday morning, according to the Elgin Police Department.
That man was identified as Gary W. Ferguson, according to police.
A police report on the city website said around 1:20 a.m., officers with Elgin PD responded to 301 E. First Street for a report of some who "had possibly been electrocuted."
When officers arrived on the scene, they found "a deceased white male atop an electrical transformer platform." That man was later identified as Ferguson.
Detectives with Elgin PD then began their death investigation into the incident, the city said.
The Elgin Fire Department, ESD 12- Fire, and Oncor all responded to ensure the scene was safe for first responders and also to remove the body of the deceased, according to the city.
"Based upon the circumstances, and the type of tools found near the body, it is believed the deceased was trying to steal copper wire," the city said.
No other details were available, and the incident remained under investigation Friday.
