1 person in custody after SWAT call in south Austin
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- One person is in custody after the Austin Police Department said its SWAT team responded to a call about a man who broke into several hotel units at the Super 8 hotel in south Austin and refused to leave.
On Monday, police said they received a call around noon for a criminal trespass of a subject in a hotel room in the 4200 block of South Interstate 35 Service Road.
The man was previously issued a criminal trespass notice, and according to APD, it could have been because he “overstayed his welcome.” He was asked to leave but when hotel employees did room checks, they found the man inside of a vacant room, police said.
Austin Police later received another call from the hotel around 12:59 p.m., but the department wasn’t able to respond as quickly due to a fatal shooting in the city at that time.
Police were then informed the man had broken into another unit, which was occupied, and stole their items, APD said. The incident escalated into a high-priority call as it is considered a Burglary of Residence, APD said.
Around 3:43 p.m., officers arrived at the hotel and saw the door open to the suspected unit and attempted to contact the man. Police said the man closed the door and refused to come out, which according to APD, is considered a barricaded subject.
After several attempts to get the man to come out of the unit, APD’s SWAT team was called to assist. The man eventually came out around 6:07 p.m. and was taken into custody, according to Austin Police.
The man is facing charges for Burglary of Residence, which is a felony, and other charges that police did not reveal.
