AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will temporarily close State Highway 29 bridge over Interstate 35 in Georgetown starting Wednesday for bridge repairs after an 18-wheeler truck crashed into the overpass early September.
The overpass at SH 29 will close Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 19 at 5 a.m., a TxDOT press release said.
According to TxDOT, eastbound traffic will detour to the southbound I-35 frontage road and U-turn at Leander Road. Westbound traffic will detour to the northbound I-35 frontage road and U-turn at Williams Drive.
In addition to these detours, the southbound I-35 main lanes from the SH 29 exit (exit 261) to the overpass will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., through Friday. The release said Williams Dr. entrance ramp will also be closed nightly, and traffic will be detoured onto the southbound I-35 frontage road.
According to TxDOT, crews will be repairing the interior beams of SH 29 and West University bridge, which were damaged from the collision. The work is anticipated to take four to five weeks to complete, TxDOT said. The eastbound lanes of SH 29 will reopen once repairs are done.
TxDOT said two beams will also be replaced. However, the agency did not say when the replacement will happen.
According to TxDOT, the truck was carrying a piece of equipment when it struck the bridge and damaged some of its beams. The collision caused pieces of the overpass bridge to fall, and unfortunately, one person was who was hit by concrete died on Sept. 9, the family's attorneys told KXAN.
