Texas couple accused of moving, leaving child behind

CCOPPERAS COVE, Texas (FOX 44) - Copperas Cove police reported a bizarre incident in which a child came home from school and found the home empty and his family gone.

Police said it appeared his mother and her boyfriend had moved out during the day while the child was in school, and when he came home, the apartment was completely bare.

Police were called to an address on Primrose Drive in Cove on Friday and spoke with the child, who had gone to a neighbor's after showing them the completely empty apartment.

The child told officers his mother, identified as Erica Renee Sanders and her boyfriend, later identified as Keven Dwayne Adams, had said they would be moving at some point. An arrest affidavit stated the neighbor told officers the couple had a history of kicking the boy out.

Officers managed to contact the couple and were told the boy's uncle was supposed to pick the child up. The arrest affidavit stated that when the uncle was contacted, he claimed to know nothing about having to take the boy.

Police said when they interviewed Adams, he "complained at length" about the 12-year-old.

The affidavit stated that when Child Protective Services contacted the couple, they refused to provide an address where they were staying.

After a connection was finally made between the police, the child and the couple, the affidavit stated it had been five and a half hours since the child found he was alone.

Copperas Cove Police Records indicated Keven Dwayne Adams and Erica Renee Sanders were both arrested on charges of abandoning or endangering a child without intent to return.
