Battle of the Lakes: District title shot on the line, Drew Brees gets his jersey retired
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Battle of the Lakes rivalry game has a little bit more to it than two top 10 teams going at it for an inside track at the district championship this year.
No. 4 Lake Travis (7-0, 3-0) heads to Chaparral Stadium to take on No. 8 Westlake (6-1, 3-0), and by the end of Friday night, the winner will remain the lone undefeated team in District 26-6A with two weeks left in the regular season. Kickoff has been moved up to 7 p.m. due to forecasted storms moving into the area.
Before the Cavaliers and Chaparrals hit the gridiron, however, a Westlake legend will get the spotlight. Drew Brees, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, will have his No. 15 retired in a pregame ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony, along with the game, will be streamed live in the video player above, on the KXAN.com Westlake streaming page and on our smart TV app, KXAN+.
Brees led the Chaps to the 5A-Division II championship in 1996, throwing for a state-leading 3,529 yards to lead the Chaps to an unbeaten record. In two seasons as the starter, Brees was 28-0-1 and missed part of his junior year with a knee injury. He went on to rewrite the Purdue football record books and had a 20-year career in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints. He's one of 52 modern-era players in consideration for 2026 enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
