Man accused of assaults near UT moved to outpatient services, court docs say

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A man accused of assaulting several students near the University of Texas at Austin in April has been ordered to be transported to an outpatient restoration program after a court deemed him incompetent to stand trial, according to court documents.

Aymen Labidi is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in connection with the reported assaults. A hearing is expected for him on Nov. 17, according to Travis County online court records.

According to his bond conditions, Labidi must stay at least 200 yards away from all UT campuses, wear a county-funded GPS tracking device and attend counseling and education services at the Austin Travis County Integral Care’s Community Competency Restoration Program. Additionally, Labidi must comply with medical, psychiatric or psychological care and treatment, including taking all psychoactive medication as recommended, court documents said.

He will stay in restoration services for no more than 120 days. He will then be reexamined for competency to stand trial.

KXAN reported in April the suspect was arrested three times and continued to be arrested and released. That person returned to the "Drag," on Guadalupe Street near UT Austin, to threaten and physically assault students. This caused concerns for student safety around west campus.

What UT Austin leaders said about campus safety

When the crime occurred, UT leaders wrote a statement sharing concerns regarding the safety and security of its students.

“When individuals threaten student safety with violent and criminal behavior, our law enforcement have been steadfast in making necessary arrests to remove these threats. But arrests are not enough. We must be able to work hand in hand with prosecutors and the local judicial system to make sure these offenders stay off our campus," UT Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife said.

A spokesperson for Travis County Judge Brown provided KXAN with a statement that said, in part, Judge Brown will continue these conversations… to advocate for a mental health jail diversion center that helps meet the needs of the campus community and Travis County.

KXAN Investigates reported that while the waitlist number for state hospital beds improve, there are still concerns as those numbers could plateau. According to the report, the waitlist peaked in December 2022, when more than 2,500 people were on it. By the end of August 2025, that number fell below 1,800.
