Sports Briefs: Crosswhite unwraps big game in Dominican win
Birthday girl Isobel Crosswhite celebrated with a double-double to lead Dominican University to a key 75-63 victory over Concordia-Irvine on Saturday in San Rafael. Crosswhite, a former star at nearby College of Marin, put up 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Penguins (10-2, 4-2 PacWest), who avenged a Dec. 15 loss to Golden Eagles this season.
The Penguins, riding a four-game win streak, also got 12 points from Janiya Sawyer and nine each from Jamia Sawyer and Alyssa Alvarado. Dominican is scheduled to host Hawaii-HIlo on Thursday.
Men’s basketball
Nick Medeiros poured in 21 points for Dominican University, but the host Penguins fell 70-65 to Concordia-Irvine on Saturday. Darius Best added 20 points for Dominican (7-5, 2-4).
Girls basketball
An undefeated Windsor squad proved too much for Archie Williams High in Saturday’s non-league contest as the Peregrine Falcons fell, 62-45. The Falcons got off to a solid start and led after the first quarter, before the Jaguars took control. Reese Patton led the Falcons (6-4) with 17 points, while Victoria Anderson Lynch had eight points and Kaiya Chiu added seven. Archie Williams is scheduled to host Miramonte on Tuesday.
- A short-handed Branson School squad lost 41-34 to Northgate on Saturday during the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase. Alyssa Huang scored seven points in her first action since returning from injury for the Bulls, who were without leading scorer Kate Spaulding. Ava Gordon led Branson with 10 points, while Juliette Caldwell-Little added eight points. The Bulls (9-7) are scheduled to play a powerful University team (8-5) on Tuesday as Branson warms up for the MCAL opener against Novato on Jan. 9.
- Addy Timmel scored a team-high 18 points as San Marin High edged American-Fremont, 57-54 in overtime, in Saturday’s non-league contest. Abby Bartholo added nine points for the Mustangs, who also got five points each from Delaney Butler and Gianna Garbarino. The Mustangs (8-6) begin MCAL play on Friday against Terra Linda.
- Marin Academy fell, 44-21, on the road to Rancho Cotate in Saturday’s non-league contest. The Wildcats (8-2) are scheduled to open Bay Counties League play on Thursday against rival San Domenico.
- Novato (4-9) fell 37-30 to St. Helena on Friday in a non-league contest.
Boys basketball
San Marin pulled ahead late for a 74-62 home victory over Maria Carrillo on Saturday after a back-and-forth contest. The Mustangs (8-6) begin MCAL play on Friday against Terra Linda.
- Redwood High hit its pace late, but a slow start hampered the Giants in Saturday’s 57-45 non-league road loss to Campolindo. The Giants (4-10) are scheduled to open MCAL play on Friday against rival Tam.
- Tam High’s scheduled home game Saturday against Windsor was cancelled due to flooding on Marin County roads.
Prep wrestling
Redwood High’s 132-pounder Dylan Morton earned four victories, three by pinfall, to secure third place at the competitive Joe Rios Memorial in Chico over the weekend. Morton has been hampered by health issues early, but is picking up steam and climbing up the state rankings.
The Giants’ Rex Kohner (109) and Ayaan Naseer (116) went 2-2 and Charlie Seraphine (147) went 1-2.
Tam High’s Dylan Van Doren (153) went 2-2, while Noah Kaijankosk (123), Owen Shore (141), Tyrell Smith (147) and Mark Estes (218) were 1-2.
- San Rafael High’s Amy Serrano was the runner-up in the lightly-contested 159-170 weight class at the Karen Foley Crossface Classic, hosted by St. Patrick-St. Vincent in Vallejo on Saturday. Serrano was a 20-1 winner over El Cerrito’s Till Warzecha to advance to the final, where Serrano lost to American Canyon’s Toni Bradley. The Bulldogs’ Mariana Barrios finished fourth in the 136-143 bracket as she went 1-3.
