SAN RAFAEL

Contractor hired
for retaining wall

The county has awarded a $923,055 contract for a new retaining wall on Point San Pedro Road.

The project will replace a distressed wall between Marina Avenue East and Summit Avenue, according to a report by the Department of Public Works. A water service rupture behind the wall in 2019 caused a section of it to collapse, the report said.

The county made emergency repairs but plans to replace a 140-foot section of the barrier. The county received 10 base bids ranging from about $769,000 to $1.37 million.

The Board of Supervisors approved a contract for the low bidder, AcuStruct, at its meeting on Jan. 20. The contract includes a base amount of $769,213 and a contingency of up to 20% for unexpected costs. The contract calls for the project to be completed in 95 working days.

For the Behavioral Health Board, the supervisors reappointed Donald Cowan and Mona Ferrer-Kaw to three-year terms. For the County Service Area #20 board, which advises the county about parks and trails projects in the Indian Valley and Domingo Canyon Open Space areas in Novato, the supervisors reappointed Jonathan Gasson to a two-year term.

The supervisors approved the appointments at their meeting on Jan. 27.

Agency to honor
cycling advocate

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is accepting nominations for the 2026 “bike champion of the year” in Marin County.

The commission confers the award annually in each of the nine counties in the region. The honor is for residents “dedicated to promoting bicycling as a primary mode of transportation and who inspire others in their communities,” the agency said.

The 2025 award in Marin went to Chuck Ford, a cycling advocate who helped launched the nonprofit organization Trips for Kids.

The nomination deadline is March 1. The winners will be announced in April. Nominations can be submitted online at shorturl.at/JuCkp.

District imposes
smog restrictions

The Bay Area Air District has issued a “spare the air alert” for Thursday because of elevated pollution levels in the forecast.

The determination means it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs or other solid fuel either indoors or outdoors.
