ABC fall lineup: ‘Black-ish’ prequel spin-off among new shows
Also, comedian Tiffany Haddish will host 'Kids Say the Darndest Things' revival
ABC on Tuesday unveiled a fall schedule that features four new shows, including another spin-off of “Black-ish.”
The moves came as part of “upfront week,” an annual ritual in New York City, where the broadcast networks show off their new inventory to advertisers.
“Black-ish,” which has already spawned a spin-off called “Grown-ish” on ABC’s cable sibling Freeform, is now about to give birth to “Mix-ish.” It’s a prequel that stars Arica Himmel as a young Rainbow Johnson, the mixed-raced character played by Tracee Ellis Ross in the original series. The sitcom will follow Rainbow and her family in the 1980s and will be paired with “Black-ish” on Tuesday nights.
ABC is adding two scripted dramas to the fall mix, including “Emergence.” It stars Allison Tolman (“Fargo,” “Downward Dog”) as a police chief who takes in a young child she finds near the site of a mysterious accident, only to learn that the child has no memory of what happened. The ensuing investigation draws her into a vast conspiracy surrounding the child’s identity.
The other drama is “Stumptown.” Based on the graphic novel series, it follows “a strong, assertive and sharp-witted army veteran-turned-private investigator in Portland, Oregon (Cobie Smulders, “How I Met Your Mother”) with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care. “Her military intelligence skills make her a great PI, but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police.”
Also making the ABC schedule is a reboot of “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” a reality show that aired in the late 1990s and had Bill Cosby interviewing young children in an attempt to draw out funny and/or provocative responses. Taking over as host and executive producer is comedian-actress Tiffany Haddish.
To make room for the new stuff, ABC handed out cancellation notices to “The Fix,” “For the People,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Splitting Up Together,” “Speechless” and “Whiskey Cavalier,”
The Thursday-night drama, “Station 19,” will return at midseason, along with “American Idol.”
In schedule moves, Nathan Fillion’s crime drama “The Rookie” relocates to Sundays and “American Housewife” shifts to Fridays.
