(CNN) — A woman was beaten to death with an electric scooter during a daytime attack as she was walking in a neighborhood in Long Beach, California, authorities said.
Rosa Elena Hernandez, 63, was assaulted around 12:30 p.m. Monday on a block of single-family homes in Long Beach’s Ramona Park neighborhood, police said.
A friend told TV station KTLA that the woman was walking home after having lunch with some friends. A man accosted her and then used a Bird rental scooter to bludgeon her, police said.
Hernandez suffered significant injuries to her upper torso and was declared dead at the scene. The attacker fled on foot.
Around 5 p.m., the suspect, identified by police as 27-year-old Amad Rashad Redding, was arrested at a minimart half a mile away.
He faces a murder charge and is being held on $2 million bail at the Long Beach City Jail, according to a statement from Long Beach Police Department.
Bird said in a statement that the company is cooperating with the criminal investigation.
“We are deeply saddened by this act of violence and our hearts and thoughts go out to the victim and her family,” a Bird spokeswoman said. “We will work with local law enforcement to help with the investigation into this tragedy.”
An online fundraiser by Hernandez’s family for funeral expenses has raised more than $2,000.
