San Jose dad arrested in connection with infant son’s death

SAN JOSE — Authorities on Tuesday arrested a 42-year-old San Jose man on suspicion of killing his 1-month-old son last year.

Officers were dispatched to a home on the 6400 block of Berwickshire Way just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 16 for a report of a baby not breathing, according to San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia.

The baby was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was identified as Owen Khovananth.

Garcia said a follow-up investigation by homicide detectives and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office revealed the baby suffered blunt force trauma.

The baby’s father, Kevin Khovananth, was eventually identified as the person responsible for the death, according to Garcia. Police did not release any more information about the chain of events that they believe led to the child’s death.

On Tuesday, Kevin Khovananth was arrested in San Jose and booked into Santa Clara County jail on felony charges of murder, child abuse causing death and child endangerment.

While not publicized at the time, the death was one of 27 homicides reported in San Jose last year.
