GILROY — Masaki Wada-Law struggled to stand, weary legs pleading for rest long into the night. Nevertheless, he found a way to stand atop the podium next the Monti twins — Joey and Matt — along with the rest of the boys track and field team for Los Gatos, which after Saturday’s crusade can for the first time call itself a Central Coast Section champion.
“It’s really an amazing feeling, I can’t really describe it,” Matt Monti said. “Since the beginning of the season our main goal has for sure been to win the CCS because our school has never done it before for the varsity boys. And it’s just every day visualizing the goal, and eventually we got there in the end.”
The Wildcats clinched the title in style by closing out the meet with a victory in the 1,600-meter relay.
Luca Bommarito took off from the blocks, then passed the baton to Vincent Foster, who gave way to Wada-Law for the third leg before Joey Monti crossed the finish line as anchor in 3:20.86.
That pushed Los Gatos to 83 points in the standings, well ahead of runner-up St. Francis (56 points).
“I’m just really glad that our team really formed together this year and we have this chance to finally win CCS as a team,” Wada-Law said.
