Starting today, Amtrak is offering travelers to buy one sleeping accommodation on trains such as the California Zephyr and bring a companion for free. The sale, which runs through June 10, includes rides from Oakland to Seattle and Emeryville to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Ideal for two, Amtrak sleeping accommodations offer meals that are included in the price of a ticket on most routes and chairs that convert into beds at night. The sale is valid for travel from August 1, 2019 through March 31, 2020.
The Seattle to Oakland roomette fare is $305 and the bedroom is $534. Emeryville to Salt Lake City is $236 (roomette) and $395 (bedroom). What’s the difference? Roomettes are 3 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 6 inches while roomier bedrooms are 6 feet 6 inches by 7 feet 6 inches.
Both feature bed linens, pillows, temperature controls, lights, bed-side storage nooks, electrical outlets, double-decker windows, a fold-down table and dedicated train attendant who books meal reservations, makes and takes down beds and assists with luggage. Bedrooms also have an in-room toilet, shower and a sofa that converts to a bed. If you’re super tall or looking to stretch out, go for the latter.
