Anthony Bourdain Day: How will you mark his birthday June 25?
Share your remembrance ideas (and yes, Bourdain would tell you to just do whatever you effing feel like)
The first anniversary of Anthony Bourdain’s tragic suicide is coming up, and two of his close friends — acclaimed chefs Eric Ripert and José Andrés — are asking Bourdain fans the world over to celebrate the man’s life and legacy on his birthday, June 25, which falls in the same month.
Ripert tweeted: IMPORTANT! JUNE 25th #BOURDAINDAY Celebrating the Life, Legacy & Birthday of our Dear Friend Anthony! Wherever U are & whoever UR with, join @chefjoseandres I & share your tributes & memories using #BourdainDay & wish Anthony Peace & Happy Birthday! RT/Spread the word! CHEERS!
The celebrity chef/traveler/storyteller — he was as famous for his unvarnished views as he was for his adventurous spirit and palate — died last June in a French village where he was shooting an episode of his TV show, “Parts Unknown.”
Although he was a citizen of the world, Bourdain had a way of forging personal connections, including here in the Bay Area, where he bonded with local chefs and made fans of those he met while filming or who came to the “Good vs. Evil” shows he presented with Ripert. (And no, we don’t have to remind you which role he played with relish.)
So tell us: How will you celebrate his legacy that day? Eat well is a given! Will you reread “Kitchen Confidential”? Binge-watch his television shows? Stand in line for a seat at his beloved Swan Oyster Depot in San Francisco? Visit one of the Oakland or San Jose restaurants he featured while filming here? Sign up for a jiu jitsu lesson? Laugh again at his hilarious ripostes?
Email your idea (be as succinct as Tony would have been!) to food@bayareanewsgroup.com OR add to article commenting below and we’ll run a roundup closer to the birthday. We’ll check in with Bay Area chefs for their views too.
