All-Bay Area News Group baseball: Meet the 2019 team
Co-players of the year
Kyle Harrison, De La Salle, Jr.: East Bay Athletic League most valuable player helped lead the Spartans (29-1) to their fourth consecutive North Coast Section Division I championship and 28 wins in a row to end the season. In 13 appearances on the mound, the 6-foot-2 Harrison went 10-0 with a 1.26 ERA as the team’s ace. He struck out 103 in 61 innings. Also had 24 hits and knocked in 20 runs while batting .286. Played first base when he was not pitching. De La Salle was crowned state team of the year by Cal-Hi Sports.
Steven Zobac, Valley Christian, Sr. Bound for Cal, the West Catholic Athletic League player of the year helped propel the Warriors to their third consecutive Central Coast Section Open Division championship. As an outfielder/pitcher, he hit .465 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 23 RBIs. He was just as dominant, if not more so, on the mound. He went 6-1 with four saves, 75 strikeouts and a 0.23 ERA over 60 ⅔ innings. In 90 ⅔ innings the past two seasons, Zobac allowed just two earned runs, both against St. Francis in a 4-2 win for Valley this season.
First team
Pitchers
Trevor Allen, Los Gatos, Sr.: First-team all-Santa Clara Athletic League De Anza Division selection and San Jose State commit led the Wildcats to the division’s regular-season title and CCS Open Division berth, going 9-0 with a 1.27 ERA.
Joey Schott, St. Francis, Jr.: West Catholic Athletic League pitcher of the year went 6-2 with a 1.52 ERA over 60 innings. Was winning pitcher in De La Salle’s only loss on the season.
Wyatt Thompson, Bishop O’Dowd, Sr.: First-team all-West Alameda County Conference Foothill League selection. Pitched 87 ⅔ innings for the NCS Division III runners–up, going 4-0 with 109 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA.
Josh White, Monte Vista, Sr.: First-team all-East Bay Athletic League section headed to Cal. Finished 5-3 with a 0.92 ERA, striking out 77 in 61 innings.
Catchers
Jack McCullar, Las Lomas, Sr.: MVP in the Diablo Athletic League’s Valley Division. Hit .461 with 37 RBIs, four home runs and 10 doubles. Scored 25 runs for a team that finished 23-4.
Aaron Parker, Los Altos, Soph: First-team all-SCVAL De Anza Division selection. Hit team-leading .461 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and 39 RBIs. Threw out 10 runners attempting to steal.
Infielders
Vince Bianchina, De La Salle, Jr.: First-team all-East Bay Athletic League selection and Northwestern commit. Hit .419 for the NCS Division I champ.
Josh Kasevich, Palo Alto, Sr.: Oregon-bound signee was named MVP of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division. Hit .407 and scored 29 runs. Also went 5-1 with a 0.52 ERA for a team that qualified for the CCS Open Division playoffs.
Jack McGrew, Valley Christian, Jr.: Did not commit an error in league play and finished with just three errors in 117 chances for the season. Also hit .306 with 22 RBIs and received first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League recognition.
Tommy Troy, Los Gatos, Jr.: First-team all-SCVAL DeAnza Division selection and Stanford commit helped lead the Wildcats to the division’s regular-season title and CCS Open Division berth, hitting a team-best .381 with five home runs and seven doubles.
Joe Yorke, Archbishop Mitty, Sr.: The eldest of the three Yorke brothers in the Mitty lineup, Joe, a Boise State commit, hit 348 with 27 RBIs as the Monarchs reached the CCS Open Division final for the first time.
Outfielders
Jake Brandel, Monte Vista, Sr.: First-team all-East Bay Athletic League selection and UC Davis commit. Hit .346 with four home runs and 22 RBIs.
Michael Dixon, Berkeley, Sr.: University of San Diego commit and player of the year in the West Alameda County Conference Foothill League. Hit .348 with a .446 on-base percentage and stole 16 bases.
Robbie Hamchuk, Leigh, Sr.: MVP of the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division and Cal State Northridge commit. Finished with 36 hits and a .396 batting average. Also drove in 28 runs and had 14 doubles and six HRs.
Eddie Park, Valley Christian, Jr.: Finished with a .377 batting average and 40 hits for the CCS Open Division champion, receiving first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League honors. Stanford commit also scored 43 runs and stole 14 bases in 15 attempts.
Designated hitter
Charles McAdoo, De La Salle, Jr.: First-team all-East Bay Athletic League selection came up huge in the playoffs, hitting a two-run double in a 2-1 NCS Division I quarterfinal win over Monte Vista and two-run HR in a 7-3 semifinal win over Foothill. Hit .333 with 26 RBIs on the season.
Nick Yorke, Archbishop Mitty, Jr.: First-team all-West Catholic Athletic League pick and Arizona commit hit .505 with 50 hits, including seven home runs, and 40 RBIs for the CCS Open Division runners-up. Also had 17 walks and a .587 on-base percentage.
Utility
Dalton Bowling, Kennedy-Fremont, Sr.: MVP of the Mission Valley Athletic League and San Jose State commit. Batted .536 with 45 hits, including 12 doubles, seven HRs and four triples. Drove in 33 runs and scored 33 runs. Had a 1.83 ERA in limited duty.
Bubba Gomez, Fremont Christian, Sr.: MVP of the Bay Counties League General Division and an Alabama A&M commit. Batted .478 with 44 hits, 46 runs and 37 RBIs. Hit 12 doubles, five HRs and four triples. Had a 1.20 ERA and 153 strikeouts over 82 innings for NCS Division V champ.
Ryan Jackson, Heritage, Jr.: Bay Valley Athletic League MVP. Led Heritage to the NCS Division I final, hitting .582 (53 for 91) with 28 RBIs. Had an on-base percentage of .642. Pitched 36 ⅔ innings and finished with a 0.76 ERA.
Chris Santiago, De La Salle, Sr.: Recognized as a first-team all-East Bay Athletic League selection and St. Mary’s commit. Finished with a .407 batting average and 17 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles and three home runs. Drove in team-best 38 runs for NCS Division I champion.
Second team
Pitchers
Brody Eglite, Alhambra, Sr.: Co-most valuable pitcher in the Diablo Athletic League’s Valley Division went 7-3 with a 1.06 ERA, including a shutout in the NCS Division III final as Alhambra defeated Bishop O’Dowd 2-0.
Nate Freeman, Benicia, Sr.: Led the Panthers to the NCS Division II championship in their first season since leaving the Sac-Joaquin Section. Did not allow an earned run in three playoff appearances and hit .443 for the season, including three hits in the NCS final against Maria Carrillo.
William Kempner, Valley Christian, Sr.: Finished 8-2 with a 1.67 ERA, receiving first-team all-WCAL recognition as Valley Christian repeated as CCS Open champ.
Christian Machado, Heritage, Soph.: Left-hander went 8-1 with a 1.51 ERA while helping Heritage reach the NCS Division I final. Received first-team all-Bay Valley Athletic League honors along the way.
Catchers
Joseph King, Woodside, Sr.: Player of the year in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Ocean Division. Drove in 29 runs while hitting .476. Eighteen of his 39 hits went for extra bases, including 14 doubles.
Matt Sugden, Foothill, Sr.: Received first-team all-East Bay Athletic League honors. Hit .325 for a team that reached the NCS Division I semifinals.
Infielders
Trevor Haskins, Valley Christian, Soph.: Stanford commit and first-team all-West Catholic Athletic League pick hit .309 with 21 RBIs as Valley claimed its third straight CCS Open Division crown.
Connor Leaverton, Archbishop Mitty, Sr.: First-team all-West Catholic Athletic League selection. Hit .320 with 33 RBIs and eight doubles. Also scored 20 runs for the CCS Open Division runners-up.
Grant Manning, Dublin, Sr.: Received first-team all-East Bay Athletic League honors, finishing the season with a .419 average and eight doubles,
Tristan Silveira, Mountain View, Jr.: Hit a team-leading .393 with 12 doubles and five triples as Mountain View won the CCS Division I championship. Also drove in 20 runs and scored 26 times, earning first-team all-SCVAL De Anza Division recognition.
Scott Siverson, Pinole Valley: Hit a team-leading .414 with 38 RBIs as Pinole Valley won 19 games and reached the quarterfinals of the NCS Division III playoffs.
Outfielders
Camron Grant, Aragon, Sr.: Named to the all-Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division first team. Had a .541 on-base percentage and .411 batting average with 33 RBIs and six home runs.
Michael O’Hara, San Ramon Valley, Sr.: Santa Clara commit and first-team all-East Bay Athletic League selection. Hit .366 with three HRs and an on-base percentage of .438.
Ryan Stemplinger, Foothill, Sr.: Hit .345 for an NCS Division I semifinalist and received first-team all-East Bay Athletic League honors.
Damian Stone, Washington-Fremont, Jr.: Hit .357 for the Mission Valley Athletic League champs, including five HRs, five triples and five doubles. Walked 21 times and had a .541 on-base percentage. Named first-team all-league.
Designated hitter
Trevor Johannes, Leland, Sr.: Co-senior of the year in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division. Led the Chargers with a .421 batting average. Drove in 36 runs and hit 11 doubles and four HRs for the CCS Division I runners-up.
Jeremy Villar, Serra, Sr.: Hit .307 with a .429 on-base percentage, leading Serra to the semifinals of the CCS Open Division playoffs. Named to the West Catholic Athletic League’s first team.
Utility
Ryan Baum, Los Altos, Sr.: First-team all-Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division selection. Hit .347 with 27 RBIs and 11 extra-base hits, including nine doubles. Had a 1.19 ERA over 82 ⅔ innings.
Jonathan Cymrot, Valley Christian, Soph.: First-team all-West Catholic Athletic League pick and Arizona commit went 8-1 with a 1.11 ERA and also hit 310 with 20 RBIs and 22 walks for the CCS Open Division champ.
Nick Kresnak, Acalanes: MVP of the Diablo Athletic League’s Foothill Division. Hit .366 with 19 RBIs for the division champ. Also went 6-2 with a 1.09 ERA.
Nick Fusari, De La Salle, Sr.: Hit .396 for the NCS Division I champions, finishing with a team-leading 38 hits, to go with 36 runs and an on-base percentage of .477.
Coach of the year
David Jeans, De La Salle: Navigated the Spartans to maybe their best season ever, a 29-1 campaign in which the school captured its fourth consecutive NCS Division I championship and finished on a 28-game winning streak. In eight seasons at the helm, Jeans is 181-47 overall and 6-2 in NCS title games.
