Caldecott Tunnel driver shot in head; CHP investigates
OAKLAND — The California Highway Patrol is responding to an injury shooting inside the Caldecott Tunnel, authorities said Sunday.
Just after 7:50 p.m., police officers and Oakland firefighters responded to the No. 4 bore of westbound Highway 24 for a report of an injured person, a CHP officer said.
When they arrived, they found a driver who was conscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head inside a vehicle, as well as a passenger who was not hit.
The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment. A condition was not immediately available.
Investigators’ efforts to gather evidence led to the bore’s closure. A Sig-alert was issued at 9:04 p.m. and canceled at 10:24 p.m.
Police said a suspect vehicle may be white in color, but released no other information and said the shooting appeared isolated.
Anyone with information should call the CHP at 707-917-4491.
