Is Elon Musk really quitting Twitter — or just making a good dad joke?
Tesla boss Elon Musk either has a great dad joke sense of humor, or he's really giving up his Twitter account.
Could it be that a new, Twitter-free Elon Musk is on the way?
Musk raised that possibility when, on Monday, the Tesla CEO said he is deleting his Twitter account. As this is Elon Musk, he made this announcement via Twitter. Of course.
Just deleted my Twitter account
— Daddy DotCom (@elonmusk) June 17, 2019
“Just deleted my Twitter account,” was all Musk had to say when he tweeted out his message about abandoning the social-media platform on Father’s Day. Musk also changed his Twitter handle to Daddy DotCom.
Neither spokespeople for Tesla nor Musk immediately returned requests for comment about Musk dropping out of Twitter and abandoning his 27 million followers, who might now actually have to read actual news to learn what Musk is up to. Until Tesla confirms Musk’s departure from Twitter, or he starts tweeting again, one might want to take his statement with a grain of salt. Look at the evidence:
- Musk changed his handle to Daddy DotCom.
- Musk tweeted that he was deleting his Twitter account on Father’s Day.
- Musk has been known to like a good joke. And for Musk, could there be a better dad joke than by telling the world on Father’s Day that he is leaving his favorite communications platform?
Still, after 10 years on Twitter and cranking out 7,890 tweets, maybe Musk has had enough of tweeting.
After all, he got into hot water last year when, without citing any evidence, he tweeted out the term “pedo guy” to describe British cave diver Vern Unsworth after Unsworth criticized Musk’s offer to help rescue a Thai boys soccer team that was trapped in a cave.
Then there was the time in 2018 when Musk tweeted that he had “funding secured” for a plan to take Tesla private for $420 a share. That statement eventually got Musk sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission on fraud charges. Musk and the SEC quickly settled the matter, with one of the settlement terms being that he was supposed to run his tweets by a Tesla lawyer if those statements might impact Tesla stock price.
So, either Musk is playing a prank on all of us and he’ll soon be back to his old tweeting ways, or Twitter is about to get a little less interesting if Musk isn’t around to tweak Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, spread his song about Harambe the gorilla, or just send out cool images of SpaceX rockets lifting off and heading into space.
