Classy Warriors go old school to congratulate Raptors on NBA championship

Imagine the surprise of Mr. and Mrs. Raptors fan when they opened the Toronto Sun on Monday morning.

The Sun? It’s a newspaper.

A newspaper? Think of it as a ponderously delivered, far more civil Twitter.

The Warriors took out a full page ad in The Sun’s Monday edition — the Raptors victory parade took place Monday — congratulating their conquerors “on their historic achievement and bringing the 2019 NBA championship to the city of Toronto.”

The ad features a photo of the Warriors’ Stephen Curry congratulating the Raptors’ Kyle Lowry. Check it out:

Ben Raby is correct. This is a class move. But then the Warriors, as an organization, have the idealist gene.

They aren’t unique. In March, Seattle Mariners utility man Dee Gordon took out a full page ad in the Seattle Times to thank the retiring Ichiro. In December, deposed Packers head coach Mike McCarthy took out a full page ad in Wisconsin newspapers to thank the team’s fans. In April, Dirk Nowitzki, upon his retirement, reached out through the Dallas Morning News to thank Mavericks fans “from the bottom of my heart.”

Almost exactly one year ago, Kevin Durant took out a full page ad in a Bay Area newspaper to thank Warriors fans. That was right around the time the Cleveland Cavaliers took out a full page ad to, uh, hmmm… The paperboy must have missed the driveway that day.
