Milpitas community briefs for the week of June 28
Summer Reading Bingo
In an effort to ensure that summer brain drain doesn’t happen, Stratford School, a private school with two campuses in Milpitas, has developed a fun way to get kids reading this summer with Summer Reading BINGO, inspired by a Stratford School student.
Summer Reading Bingo cards for preschoolers through first-graders and second- through fifth-graders are available by searching for “bingo” at https://stratfordschools.com.
Students who get five in a row before Aug. 9 can put their name in for a raffle.
Resources for re-entry
Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved $6.7 million in contracts this month for services intended to help individuals exiting jail and prison access critical resources such as employment, housing, health care, legal assistance and coping skills for rebuilding their lives in the community.
“These investments improve public safety, strengthen families, and reduce our reliance on costly and ineffective mass incarceration,” County Supervisor Cindy Chavez, chair of the county’s Re-entry Network, said in a statement. “This can have a huge impact in helping re-entry clients to heal, rejoin their families and become self-sufficient.”
Nine community organizations that provide services through the county’s Re-entry Resource Center were awarded contracts effective July 1, including Pro Bono Project Silicon Valley, Goodwill of Silicon Valley and Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, Goodwill and ConXion to Community, Breakout Prison Outreach, Mental Health Systems Inc., San Jose State University Research Foundation, and HealthRight 360 and Carry the Vision.
