‘Cannibal! The Musical’ by ‘South Park’ creator Trey Parker hits SF
Long before "Book of Mormon," "South Park" co-creator Trey Parker wrote "Cannibal! The Musical," which finally gets its Bay Area premiere.
Several years before “South Park” and many more before “The Book of Mormon,” back in 1993, Trey Parker wrote, directed, produced, co-composed and starred in a musical horror comedy film in college called “Cannibal! The Musical.”
Based on the true story of 19th-century American prospector Alferd “The Colorado Cannibal” Packer, the show mixes cheerful “Oklahoma!”-style musical numbers with some downright gruesome humor.
Now, new Contra Costa County theater company the Other Other Theatre Company closes out its inaugural season with the much-belated Bay Area premiere of the stage adaptation of that early endeavor.
For the Other Other Theatre Company, It’s a season that, amusingly enough, has primarily consisted of works by writers better known for their screen work — Ethan Coen’s “Almost an Evening” and Aaron Sorkin’s “A Few Good Men” — plus the purely theatrical Sarah Ruhl’s “Stage Kiss.”
As usual for the company the shows are on Sunday and Monday evenings, when most other theaters are dark, but unusually for the troupe, this particular show is in San Francisco, at MoonSpace near City Hall.
